Requirements

To become a lifeguard at the RPAC pools, you must be a student at The Ohio State University and hold the following current certifications: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Staff Selection Process

  1. Complete a Department of Recreational Sports application online.
  2. Once your application is received, you will be contacted with the date of our next skills evaluation.
  3. Participate in a skills evaluation session (see below for details). 
  4. Successful candidates from the skills evaluations will be invited to group interview and orientation. 
  5. Candidates who are selected from the interview process will be asked to participate in our pre-employment training as a condition of employment. 
  6. Pre-employment training includes: Traditions Training and Sexual Harassment Awareness (4 hours) and Water Training session (2 hours).

Please note that you must bring copies of your current certifications and a grid-style copy of your class schedule from the Registrar's Home Page to the skills evaluation.

The skills evaluation includes: 

  • Completing a brief written quiz
  • Completing 500-yard swim (using front crawl and breast stroke) in 12minutes or less
  • Retrieving a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the 17 ft. diving well; treading water, using legs only, for 90 seconds while holding a 10 lb. brick with both hands
  • Performing a rescue scenarios and remove the victim from the pool
  • Demonstrating additional skills, which include a combination of rescue breathing, obstructed airway, and CPR skills
